Jody Meads, Member/President and Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Meads is a member of the LLC and part of the Senior Leadership Team for Acute Medical Services, LLC. In addition to being a founding member, Mr. Meads is a Licensed Paramedic with over twenty-two years of experience in the public and private emergency medical service industry. He has had the good fortune to experience both rural and urban emergency medical services as well as clinical emergency medicine and industrial safety programs. Mr. Meads’ management experience spans more than fifteen years, of which he proudly dedicated to public service twelve years leading the Harris County Emergency Services District 1.
Mr. Meads is an entrepreneurial spirit with a proven track record of success leading diverse organizations through team building and loyalty cultivation. He is an out of the box thinker who believes patients are always the benefactors when everyone remembers patient care is what unites us.
Mr. Meads has a proven ability to maximize revenue dollars by leveraging scant resources to programs that can provide the best value to the organization and the patient. He has repeatedly succeeded in new ventures by remembering money is important but service is paramount.
Kevin Matlock, Vice President
Mr. Matlock is a founding member of the LLC and a part of the Senior Leadership team. Mr. Matlock has more than eight years’ experience in emergency medical and fire services with specialties, which include OSHA standards and Hazardous Materials related incidents.
Mr. Matlocks’s management experience includes six years of public service to Harris County at the Harris County Emergency Services District 1 where he was responsible for community and public relations and the Air Medical Division.
In addition to his responsibility liaising with the community Mr. Matlock was directly responsible for designing and ensuring the efficient delivery of the special operations of the ESD. Event Medical protection and Services was a key component of the Special Operations Division.
Mr. Matlock too lends his entrepreneurial experience to the leadership team having proven his success through multiple start-up organizations, which have grown to successful small businesses.
Chris Bush, Chief Operations Officer, Secretary
Mr. Bush serves as a member of the LLC and its Secretary. He is a member of the Senior Leadership team with more than nineteen years of experience in all aspects of public safety and the public services sector.
Mr. Bush served in a leadership role during his fifteen years of public service for the Harris County Emergency Services District 1 with the last five years managing the Critical Care operations.
Mr. Bush’s experience also includes the management of standalone Urgent Care Facilities and flight medicine. He has maintained his flight medic certification and has worked to expand our offerings by building relationships with air medical and urgent care providers. Mr. Bush is a proven leader in cultivating relationships and bringing divergent groups together to identify ways to work together to achieve common often overlooked shared goals
Dr. Setul Patel MD,Chief Medical Director
Dr. Patel and his partners founded Neighbors Emergency Center (NEC) in 2008 when they saw the need for a stress-free emergency room experience. It’s common for patients to be seen by Dr. Setul Patel, a compassionate physician committed to the health of his community.
Dr. Patel is a Board Certified Physician specializing in Emergency Medicine. He has provided forward thinking medical direction for our EMS and Critical Care teams since 2009. He plays a pivotal role in ensuring our Prehospital providers are clinicians not simply technicians helping to set Acute Medical Services apart from other providers of ambulance services.
Dr. Joseph Varon MD, FACP, FCCP, FCCM, FRSM, Associate Medical Director
Dr. Varon serves as our Associate Medical Director responsible for our Critical Care Paramedic Teams.
Dr. Varon is the Chief of Critical Care Services and Past Chief of Staff at University General Hospital in Houston, Texas. He is a Professor of Acute and Continuing Care at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Texas and Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He is also Professor of Medicine, Surgery and Professor of Emergency Medicine at several universities in Mexico, the Middle East and Europe.
After completing medical training at the UNAM Medical School in Mexico City, Mexico, Dr. Varon served as internship in internal medicine at Providence Hospital/George Washington University, Washington, D.C. A subsequent residency in internal medicine was completed at Stanford University School of Medicine in Stanford, California. Dr. Varon also served fellowships in critical care medicine and pulmonary diseases at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
An avid researcher, Dr, Varon has contributed more than 630 peer-reviewed journal articles, 10 full textbooks, and 9 dozen book chapters to the medical literature. He is also a reviewer for multiple journals and currently serves as Editor-in-Chief for Critical Care and Shock and Current Respiratory Medicine Reviews. Dr. Varon has won many prestigious awards and is considered among one of the top physicians in the United States. Dr. Varon is also known for his groundbreaking contributions to Critical Care Medicine in the fields of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and therapeutic hypothermia. He has developed and studied technology for selective brain cooling. He is also a well-known expert in the area of hypertensive crises management. With Dr. Carlos Ayus, he co-described the hyponatremia associated to extreme exercise syndrome also known as the “Varon-Ayus syndrome”.
Dr. Varon has lectured in over 55 different countries around the globe. Along with Professor Luc Montagnier (Nobel Prize Winner for Medicine in 2008), Dr. Varon created the Medical Prevention and Research Institute in Houston, Texas, where they conduct work on basic sciences projects. Dr. Varon has appeared in National and International television and radio shows with his techniques and care of patients. Dr. Varon is well known for his academic and clinical work in the management of acute hypertension and has published extensively on this subject.
Attorney John S Cossum., Lead Counsel
Acute Medical Services is proud to include Houston Attorney John Cossum as an invaluable member of its leadership team. Attorney Cossum brings twenty-five years of experience in State and Federal criminal law. His experience in client service has proven an asset to our organization. His commitment to quality and sense of pride in community is apparent through his involvement with our organization.
Attorney Cossum’s experience includes six years of public service as a State Prosecuting Attorney and two years as Special Assistant US Attorney. But most of all he strengthens our organization with over eight active years of experience specifically in laws pertaining to Emergency Medical Services.
Deanna Salas., Executive Assistant
Ms. Salas provides all of our cash flow and human resources management for the organization. She has Five years’ experience managing multi-company financial accounts and year-end tax preparations as well as three years of commercial banking experience.
Ms. Salas’ ten years Retail Management experience has been an unforeseen benefit to our EMS leadership team. Her customer first focus from the retail industry is emblazoned in each interaction she has with every member of our team and each customer interaction in which she participates. She plays a vital role in the financial health of our organization, our staff and our vendor partners with whom she interacts. Her understanding of the importance of attention to detail to achieve crisis avoidance vs. crisis management has been a model of team cohesiveness.
